According to the UN AIDS report, about 70 percent of 40 million people who contracted AIDS virus in the world in 2003 live mainly in Sub-Saharan regions. Last year alone, 5 million people contracted the virus in the region, where the epidemic rapidly spreads.
Ghana has a relatively low rate of AIDS patients among other African nations. Some say early AIDS prevention measure was successful in Ghana perhaps because the government promoted family planning as a population control.
Because AIDS patients are still minorities in the nation and education informing of the epidemic as "deadly disease," the patients still experience discrimination and prejudice without a better understanding.
Experts say it is difficult to educate the youth about the disease prevention for fear that it may encourage sexual activity and trigger juvenile delinquency. |
